Nicholas de Godoy Lopes received his BA at Louisiana State University and his MA in the history of design and curatorial studies in the Parsons/Cooper-Hewitt program. His thesis studied art nouveau pattern books as disseminators of theories of ornament centered on nature and shaped by the natural sciences, particularly biology. His dissertation research builds on this project by exploring nineteenth-century pattern books of new, fashionable designs as tools for disseminating and leveraging specific notions of creativity within Europe’s industrializing labor structures. Before coming to BGC, he was a McDermott Intern in Decorative Arts and Design at the Dallas Museum of Art, a MuSe intern in the European Sculpture & Decorative Arts department at the Met, and a master’s fellow in the Wallcoverings department at the Cooper-Hewitt.
