After a zoning resolution passed in 1916, below 42nd Street
between Fifth and Ninth Avenues, dozens of new high-rise factories attracted
the largest group of clothing manufacturers in the world. We will view
landmarked department stores and distinctive loft buildings that mostly
produced men’s and women’s apparel. In addition, the fading fur district will
be discussed, as well as the SJM Building designed by Cass Gilbert and the
mid-20th-century modern campus of the Fashion Institute of Technology, where
thousands continue to train for work in this important industry.
