Andrew Dolkart will lead a tour will explore the surviving 19th-century architecture of lower Manhattan focusing on sites featured in the BGC Focus Gallery exhibition, Visualizing 19th-Century New York. We begin at the former Merchants’ Exchange, a symbol of the city’s commercial wealth, and then continue along Wall Street, past the original U.S. Custom House, to Trinity Church, the most prominent building on the 19th-century urban skyline. Walking along Broadway, we will discover the commercial, institutional, and civic design that set the stage for the development of New York as the great metropolis of the United States, and conclude with the grand retail emporiums in what is now Tribeca.
