In this evening of richly textured music and poetry Juan Carlos Galeano will read from his works, which are inspired by Amazonian indigenous cosmologies and the modern world and embody themes of transformation, violence, and rebirth. Guitarist Francisco Roldán and soprano Olfary Gutiérrez will perform traditional songs from various regions of Colombia that express the variety and beauty of its people, and guitar solos by composers including Porros and Pasillos.


Juan Carlos Galeano is a poet and translator whose work has been published in several journals, including The Atlantic Monthly, Ploughshares, and Casa de las Américas. He is a professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University, where he teaches Spanish American poetry and cultures of Amazonia.

Francisco Roldán
is a classical guitarist who has performed internationally and throughout the United States at venues including Merkin Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is on the faculty of Mannes College The New School for Music, and Lehman College,

Olfary Gutiérrez
is a soprano and the director of the Spanish Choir at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
