In its conception the Waterweavers exhibition began by exploring a strategy referred to by curator José Roca as “figure/ground,” an idea that describes the connections between immersive wall-based artworks and functional objects placed at the center of each gallery. In this conversation, moderated by art critic Gregory Volk, José Roca will discuss the development of this idea and its final realization in the exhibition with the artists Susana Mejía and Jorge Lizarazo.

Jorge Lizarazo is a designer and founder of Hechizoo, a weaving atelier based in Bogotá, that makes contemporary textiles using traditional methods.

Susana Mejía is an artist whose work in the exhibition centers on the investigation of natural pigments in the Colombian Amazon. With the assistance of indigenous communities, she has identified eleven botanical species and the processes used to dye natural fibers.

José Roca is Estrellita B. Brodsky Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art at Tate Modern in London and Artistic Director of FLORA ars+natura, an independent space for contemporary art in Bogotá.

Gregory Volk is an art critic, curator, and associate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts.
