Bard Graduate Center is hosting its fourth National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for college and university educators this summer (July 3–28, 2017). The co-directors of the four-week Summer Institute on American Material Culture: Nineteenth-Century New York are Catherine Whalen and Katherine C. Grier. The Bard Graduate Center community deeply mourns the passing of co-director David Jaffee on January 20, 2017. In addition to his many outstanding achievements as a scholar and a teacher, David originated the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute American Material Culture: Nineteenth-Century New York at Bard Graduate Center
The Institute offers eighteen college and university educators an opportunity to explore the use of material culture in their research and as an instructional medium, utilizing New York City as their lab. Leading scholars will join our interdisciplinary research community as guest faculty and conduct seminars, guide hands-on object study sessions, and direct activities promoting innovative classroom practice. Summer Scholars will also learn from curators and public historians on field trips to museums and historic sites. Learn more about the Institute at its website here.
