2013 marks the publication of the BGC’s landmark survey, History of Design: Decorative Arts and Material Culture, 1400-2000.

2013 marks not only twenty years of remarkable institutional growth and scholarly achievement for the BGC, it also celebrates the publication of our landmark survey, History of Design: Decorative Arts and Material Culture, 1400-2000. Edited by Founder/Director Susan Weber and Professor Pat Kirkham, the work spans six centuries of decorative arts and design produced in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Indian subcontinent, and the Islamic world.

On November 6, editors Susan Weber and Pat Kirkham joined with the contributing authors, BGC faculty and alumni, and friends and colleagues from the academic, museum, and design worlds in celebration. Mariët Westermann, Vice President, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and Ian Wardropper, Director, the Frick Collection made remarks on this ground-breaking textbook, a first in the field.

History of Design: Decorative Arts and Material Culture, 1400-2000 is available from Yale University Press.
